Creating a Culture That Attracts Top Talent
by Jonathan Jones
A business’s long-term success depends on its ability to attract, develop and retain elite personnel. It is common for high achievers to flourish in the company of colleagues who motivate them to excel rather than acquiesce to perceived superiority. Changes come with expansion in any environment. Top performers who have elevated a company’s in-house talent to new heights might occasionally fall back into mediocrity due to a lack of the challenges they seek. So, how do you keep your most outstanding employees engaged and motivated to do their best?
1. Set elevated expectations for yourself and others. High performers like being pushed outside their comfort zones.
2. Make a point of recognizing and appreciating those who go above and beyond. Establish some form of reward or recognition for exceptional achievements. A simple “thank you” also goes a long way in motivating high-performing employees.
3. Keep an eye out in your community and business for individuals with unique talents and experiences that may not fit into your sector’s usual blueprint. An outlier’s unconventional attributes may inspire leaders to try new things to pursue greater creativity and financial success.
4. Allow underachievers a chance to learn and grow. If they do not improve despite significant investment in coaching, remove them from the company. By eliminating the pressure of a low performer, your most exemplary employees will be motivated to new levels of success.
5. Develop top talent for their respective roles by providing appropriate peer-group training. You’re investing in your most precious assets.
The best employees want to work in an atmosphere where they can succeed. It’s your job to establish the ecosystem they require to thrive.
