Clementine’s Ice Cream
Tamara Keefe
Industry: Food & Hospitality
Website: www.clementinesicecream.com
What have been the keys to success for the business? The biggest key has been staying true to who we are. We’ve never cut corners on quality, and we’ve never lost sight of the customer experience. Every decision starts with asking what’s best for our guests and our team. We’ve also been intentional about growth. We didn’t try to grow overnight. We focused on building a strong foundation, surrounding ourselves with great people, and making sure every new opportunity aligned with our values.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? Know your numbers, but don’t lose sight of your purpose. Build a business that solves a real problem and creates an experience people can’t stop talking about. Hire people who are smarter than you and trust them to do what they do best. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Stay curious, be willing to adapt, and don’t be afraid of setbacks. Some of the biggest lessons come from the moments that don’t go as planned.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? One of the smartest things we did was prepare for growth before we needed it. We invested in our team, strengthened our operations, and made sure we had the right foundation in place before taking the next step. That preparation positioned us to bring on the right investment partners and continue expanding without losing sight of the quality and culture that have always defined Clementine’s.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? Everything starts with quality. We make ice cream the old-fashioned way, using the best ingredients we can find and creating flavors that tell a story. But it’s more than the product. We want every visit to feel special, whether it’s someone’s first scoop or their hundredth. We also believe in giving back to the communities we serve and creating a place where both our guests and our team feel genuinely cared for. That’s what people remember.

What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year?
Strength Through Partnership
As part of the Hoffmann Family of Companies, we are backed by one of the nation’s premier business organizations, including nine of the country’s leading luxury transportation companies. This partnership provides the scale, resources, and shared expertise to drive continuous innovation across our organization. One of the first major advantages has been the creation of our captive insurance group, allowing us to better manage risk, control costs, and strengthen our long-term stability—benefits that ultimately enhance the value and service we provide to our clients.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? We differentiate ourselves through our people, our integrated business model, and our commitment to innovation. Companion Baking
Josh Allen
Industry: Food manufacturing
www.companionbaking.com
What have been the keys to success for the business? We call it taking care of the 4 Cs. First, we take care of our companions (employees). If we do that well, they’ll take care of our customers. That allows us to support our community. When those three things are working together, the company takes care of itself. It’s a simple philosophy, but it’s guided us from day one.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? The day I opened the bakery, after helping me buy my first oven, my grandfather gave me some advice: “Shut up and listen to your customers. They’ll tell you how to grow your business.” I’ve tried to follow that advice every day since. The best ideas for improving your business usually come from the people you serve.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? We continued investing in great people. Over the past year, we’ve strengthened our leadership team in anticipation of long-term growth. Equipment matters and systems matter, but neither works very well without talented people to lead and support them. Building a strong team is still the best investment we’ve made.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? We’re a relationship-driven business. We fight for opportunities to meet customers face-to-face rather than relying on emails and sample boxes. We’d much rather get on a plane, walk into a restaurant or grocery store, and spend time understanding their needs. At the end of the day, people buy from people, and relationships still matter.
Key Equipment and Key Rents
Michael Vislay
Industry: Municipal and Contractor Equipment Sales
www.keyequipment.com
www.keyrents.com
What have been the keys to success for the business? Staying true to the core of our business by focusing on every aspect: sales, service, parts, and rental. Within the core, we focus on the successful discipline of each department and their teams as well as keeping true to our culture and direction. Along with a strong culture, we take great pride in the longevity of our team members who have been with us for a long time; they bring the knowledge, culture, and drive every day for success. Our new team members are hired based on our culture and drive and come in with an open mind to learn from our industry veterans, constructing the best team in the industry. Discipline, people, and culture turn our wheels every day to success.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? Set your long-term goals to guide you (never lose sight of them), but be nimble enough to achieve your daily goals.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? We did a complete restructuring to make sure each division was servicing our customers together at the highest possible level with a direct focus on the whole business. Each division restructured, with our COO as the pivot point, to make sure all are communicating and working together for the best outcome for our customers, team members, and the company. As we continue to grow, we must constantly change to accommodate our growth and the addition of new facilities and team members.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? Our people, our equipment, our deployment of resources, and our daily ground game sets us apart from our competition. We are aggressive in our approach and coverage in our small geographical region. We engage the customer from multiple levels to drive success.
C.M. Products
JoyLynn Waganer
Industry: Conveying and Products
www.cmproducts.co
What have been the keys to success for the business? C.M. Products’ success comes from pairing more than four decades of conveyor expertise with innovation, creativity, genuine care, and determined problem-solving. We listen closely, develop dependable, application-specific solutions, and make it easy for customers to work with us. By investing in our people, strengthening our systems, and building genuine long-term partnerships, we continue to grow without losing the responsive, family-business service on which C.M. Products was founded.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? Build a company where people feel trusted, heard, and connected to a meaningful purpose. Strong businesses grow when leaders pair clear strategy with genuine care, invite ideas from every level, and stay close to customers. Be willing to adapt, invest in your team, and turn real-world problems into better solutions. Giving back together has strengthened our culture and reminded us that success is measured not only by revenue, but also by the positive impact we create for employees, customers, and our community.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? Our smartest move was advancing RollerGold™ from multi-year research and testing into a launch-and-scale phase. This proprietary conveyor roller cover reduces impact noise at the source, helping facilities create quieter, safer work environments without replacing entire conveyor systems. We strengthened the foundation around it by preparing domestic manufacturing capacity, improving CRM and SOPs, building our sales and leadership structure, and continuing to protect the intellectual property. By aligning innovation, people, systems, and production, we positioned C.M. Products to bring RollerGold™ to conveyor-driven facilities nationwide.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? C.M. Products is more than a supplier; we become an extension of our customers’ problem-solving teams. We combine more than four decades of conveyor experience, responsive service, custom capabilities, and domestic manufacturing with the agility to move from idea to application. Customers choose us because we simplify complex needs and deliver durable solutions that protect people and improve operations.
David Kley, Hexxen
Industry: Web Development, Design, Advertising, SEO
https://hexxen.com/
What have been the keys to success for the business? Hexxen’s success has been built on a simple philosophy: deliver measurable results while continually innovating. Rather than offering isolated marketing services, we combine SEO, web design, software development, automation, AI integration, and API development into solutions tailored to each client’s goals. We prioritize long-term partnerships, transparency, and accountability, allowing clients to see the impact of our work. By staying ahead of technology, investing in custom solutions, and maintaining a relentless focus on quality and client success, Hexxen has earned lasting relationships across a wide range of industries.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? Success comes from solving real problems consistently rather than chasing trends. Focus on building trust, delivering exceptional work, and creating long-term relationships with clients. Be willing to adapt as technology and markets evolve, but never compromise your standards or integrity. Invest in your team, listen to customer feedback, and make decisions based on data instead of assumptions. Sustainable growth is rarely the result of a single big idea; it comes from continuous improvement, disciplined execution, and a commitment to delivering value every day.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? Over the past year, our smartest decision has been to invest heavily in AI while keeping human expertise at the center of everything we do. We developed internal automation tools, AI-assisted workflows, and custom software that improve efficiency for both our team and our clients without sacrificing quality or strategy. Rather than replacing people, we use technology to eliminate repetitive tasks, accelerate development, and uncover better insights. This approach has allowed us to deliver more value, scale our services, and help clients stay competitive in an increasingly technology-driven marketplace.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? Hexxen differentiates itself by combining marketing, technology, and software development under one roof. While many agencies focus solely on advertising or SEO, we also build custom applications, automation systems, API integrations, and AI-powered solutions that help clients operate more efficiently and grow faster. Every strategy is tailored to the client’s business objectives, with an emphasis on measurable results rather than one-size-fits-all services. This technical depth, combined with a commitment to transparency, innovation, and long-term partnerships, allows us to solve problems that traditional marketing agencies often cannot.
Jump Company
Jon Tiede
Industry: Branding/Advertising/Marketing
www.jumpcompany.com
What have been the keys to success for the business? As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we’re proud to be one of the largest and longest-standing independent advertising agencies in the St. Louis region. Our clients have included national organizations, such as NASCAR and Children’s Miracle Network, as well as respected regional brands like Bank of Springfield and Memorial Health. Two guiding principles drive our success: continually evolve to meet client needs through expanded capabilities — including performance marketing, research and in-house video production — and build lasting client relationships. Delivering exceptional service and results has always been, and will continue to be, the foundation of everything we do.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? As a business owner, I’ve found you must continually adapt, listen to the market and embrace emerging technologies. Refine your strategies to deliver the services and solutions clients need today, but anticipate those they’ll need tomorrow.
While constant evolution is critical, never underestimate the power of great client service. That will never go away, and that’s always been our strong suit. We build great relationships by going above and beyond to meet clients’ needs, working alongside their teams where they need us and providing collaborative consultation across their business to support short- and long-term success. That’s the key to our longstanding, trusted partnerships.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? AI has enabled a whole new way of operating and providing value to clients. In the last year, we’ve moved our agency from pilot stage to reality, transforming our model to drive efficiency and better outcomes across all we do. One example is a proprietary growth system we built that leverages AI along with in-house technologies, first-party data, market trends, intent signals and more. This system delivers insights and predictive data that our strategy team can leverage to bring comprehensive analysis and recommendations to drive growth for our clients.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? Our agency excels at forging strong client partnerships that drive powerful results for their business. This has come to life through differentiated rebrands, significant year-over-year lead generation growth and targeted talent acquisition campaigns that have resulted in millions in savings for clients.
We deliver proven processes that consist of insightful, data-backed strategies, exceptional creative, targeted media and measurable results. As companies grapple with their identities in the age of AI, we’ve ensured the foundation that sets Jump apart hasn’t changed, while developing systems and skills that leverage AI to expand our thinking, increase efficiency and provide more value for our clients.

Title: CEO & Founder
Industry: Commercial & Residential Painting/Construction

What have been the keys to success for the business? Our success comes from combining professionalism with community impact. We’ve built trust by delivering consistent, high-quality work for leading general contractors and institutions, while also showing up for the community through initiatives like annual toy giveaways and youth mentorship. That balance of excellence and purpose drives our growth.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find success in business? Stay disciplined, invest in relationships, and never stop learning. Business is built on consistency — showing up with professionalism every time, even when no one is watching. Surround yourself with mentors, take risks with intention, and align your business with something bigger than profit to create lasting impact.
Hawthorne Animal Hospital
Dr. Paul Myer
Industry: Veterinary Medicine
hawthorneanimals.com
What have been the keys to success for the business? Our key to success has been working with the client to find out what they believe will create the best life for their pet and to develop the health care plan to make that happen.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? No one can do everything alone. All successful business owners have surrounded themselves with a team. That includes subject matter experts outside the business and an exceptional staff to do the daily tasks. How all the team members work together is what sets the great business apart from the others.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? The smartest thing we did last year was improve technology in our practice. We improved our efficiency with new software that utilizes AI to decrease the amount of time spent on office work and allow us to pay more attention to patients.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? Hawthorne Animal Hospital believes that animals need 24/7 care. Just like us, animals sometimes have health issues at night and on the weekends. We work very hard to be available to our clients when they need us the most. To achieve this, we have a team that believes in the mission to provide exceptional care.
Hawthorne Capital Wealth Advisors
Brian Bachelier
Industry: Financial Services
hcwadvisor.com
What have been the keys to success for the business? Our success comes down to a few fundamentals: put clients first, do what we say we will do, communicate consistently, and deliver exceptional advice and service. We must continue to earn trust by being proactive, responsive, knowledgeable, and accountable. Growth will come from deepening existing relationships, serving multiple generations of each family, attracting the right new clients, and continually improving how we operate. Most importantly, we need to work as one team—sharing ideas, supporting each other, embracing change, and never becoming complacent. Take great care of people, and the business will take care of itself.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? Focus on the things you can control: take care of your customers, hire good people, manage your cash flow, and stay adaptable. Know what your business does well and resist the temptation to chase every opportunity. Build systems that allow the company to grow without everything depending on you. Listen to your employees and customers, learn from mistakes quickly, and never stop improving. Most importantly, protect your reputation. Trust takes years to build and moments to lose. Success rarely comes from one big decision—it comes from consistently making good decisions over a long period of time.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? The smartest thing we did this past year was start planning for the future before we had to. Our succession planning conversations pushed us to collaborate more, share ideas more openly, and think beyond our individual practices. It helped us identify opportunities to work together, improve how we serve clients, and build a stronger firm for the next generation. Rather than waiting for change to happen to us, we started preparing for it—and that has created better communication, stronger relationships, and a clearer vision for where we want the business to go.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? We differentiate ourselves by using conservative options strategies to help clients generate additional income and potentially improve portfolio returns. Strategies such as cash-secured puts and covered calls can create income from assets clients already own—or are willing to own—while maintaining a disciplined approach to risk. Rather than using options for speculation, we use them as a portfolio management tool designed to enhance income, improve entry and exit points, and make client portfolios work more efficiently over time.
Exit 11 Coffee, llc
Angela Garland
Industry: Specialty Coffee
https://www.exit11coffee.com/
What have been the keys to success for the business? We were financially conservative in our personal lives long before the business ever looked successful. We lived in a small house for six years, kept our corporate jobs the first couple of years to stabilize cash flow, and put everything we made straight back into the business instead of taking anything out. When traditional financing wasn’t an option early on, we got creative, working out trade arrangements to keep moving forward. That discipline and willingness to find unconventional paths when the conventional ones were closed is what got us through the early years.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? Build the back-office systems before you think you need them. Most owners wait until they’re drowning to formalize compensation plans, financial reporting, or org structure, and by then it’s a crisis fix instead of a strategic build. Look at your numbers every day. And separate the roles clearly. If you and a partner or spouse are running the business together, define who owns what before ego or urgency forces the conversation.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? Pulling the trigger on a 9,000 sq ft warehouse and corporate headquarters, hoping to move in by mid-August. It puts all of our corporate employees under one roof and builds in the efficiencies we need to serve our drive-thru locations better as we keep growing. It’s more space than we need, but an infrastructure decision we needed to make for growth.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? We roast our own coffee, make our own organic syrups (eight of them), and make our own food items that include locally sourced, nitrate-free, and clean ingredients. Most competitors in the drive-thru coffee space outsource that entirely or don’t offer food at all. Our two-sided drive-thru format also moves people through faster than the single-lane model most chains use. But what really sets us apart is that we’re more analog than digital: hospitality at the window, baristas who know your order, and a happy hustle that makes people feel welcomed and connected, not just processed through a lane.
St. Louis Caster + Equipment
Mike Wilcox
Industry: Material Handling Equipment Distribution
www.stlouiscaster.com
What have been the keys to success for the business? I hired an office manager/controller who understood how to implement a cash flow strategy and a tax strategy. These are two things that could sink any business if you do them wrong.
What is your best advice for other business owners to find business success? Before even thinking about scaling, make sure your business is in order. Scaling before fixing problems is like trying to fill a bucket with holes in it. Know your numbers and control your expenses first. Use debt as a tool for growth, not a way to pay for things that you cannot afford.
What’s the smartest thing your company did in the past year? I created a spreadsheet with revenue by month at the top for 12 months. Below was every expense line by month for everything, including payroll, rent, phone, utilities, insurance, etc. Make sure you capture credit card payments and lines of credit. This was the single most revealing exercise I have ever done. It will tell you what changes you need to make.
How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry? Simon Sinek said, “People don’t care what you do, they care why you do it.” I believe that every organization deserves the right equipment when they need it. Business is about helping people. Period.
