Networking - How's That Working For You?
by James Canada
If you are one of those people who dread face-to-face networking meetings and one-on-ones, it may be easier than you think to turn that around.
As someone who thrives on networking, I have found that the secret is to have a giving attitude. My philosophy is that you can never give too much. The more you offer another person, and help them, the more they may feel indebted and possibly willing to reciprocate.
Conversely, I notice that all you have to do is ask, and people are willing to help. We often overlook the fact that most people are eager to “pay it forward.” Those givers are always top on my list for receiving connections — and they stay on my radar screen.
As you network, keep in mind that people are attracted to people with vision, energy and excitement. If you are positive and want to do the right thing, you will experience the doors opening without effort — and you’ll get help sooner than the next person who might be having a “pity party.”
I’ve discovered that networking is one of the best ways to grow revenue. But I have learned that you can’t just make “cold calls” and expect to get business. People like to buy from those they know and trust. In this digital world, networking is a unique opportunity to meet people eye-to-eye and freely exchange ideas.
Of course, there were times in the beginning when I wondered whether anyone would return the favor. It can be a little discouraging when you are first starting your network. But I would say to you, press on — because you will get to that point when the phone starts ringing. It is an exciting time when that happens!
