Will Your Talent Plans Support Your Business Growth?
by John Gross
During the Royal Banks Economic Forecast Meeting last November, Ron Ameln made an insightful point: We need to grow our talent pool at the rate that we want to grow our business!
Many leaders claim their people are their top priority, but do their actions reflect this when it comes to talent development? Have they envisioned the future of their organization and identified leaders who can step into key roles?
In the EOS system, we encourage clients to create accountability charts that outline the structure and key roles needed to take the business to the next level in the next 6-12 months. These charts help identify whether or not the business has the right people to drive growth.
If you find that your team doesn’t have the people who “get it,” “want it,” or have the capacity, it’s time to focus on developing or recruiting talent. Here are some tips to build your talent pool:
- Share your vision and accountability chart: Show employees that growth opportunities exist within the business.
- Offer development opportunities: Provide training, mentorship, and ways for employees to enhance their skills.
- Give stretch assignments: Challenge high-potential employees with new responsibilities outside their comfort zone so they grow and you can observe how they handle the experience.
- Recognize and reward talent: Demonstrate that you value your employees’ contributions.
- Hire for potential: When recruiting, look for candidates who can grow into future leadership roles.
Just as you plan for equipment and facilities, your talent development strategy should be a key part of your business growth plan.
