In September, we start thinking about the holidays and next year’s plans. We start thinking about wrapping up projects, how we will finish the year, and our goals for next year.

What we don’t think much about is how we will measure those new goals. We don’t think about how we will know if we are winning or losing.

Without clear success metrics, even the best annual goals and quarterly plan become vague aspirations. Your team can’t help you reach the finish line if they can’t see the goalposts.

Once you’ve defined your annual goals and quarterly priorities, take the next step—create a scorecard that measures progress in real time. Track these numbers weekly, and if you’re off track, take corrective action before small issues become big problems.

Scorecard Do’s:
• Keep it simple—5 to 15 key metrics is enough.
• Define what success looks like and the actions that lead there.
• Use straightforward measurements; avoid complex calculations.
• Give employees metrics they can influence directly.

Scorecard Don’ts:
• Don’t copy someone else’s scorecard—your business is unique.
• Don’t clutter it with irrelevant or outdated measures.

A well-aligned scorecard creates visibility, accountability, and urgency. It turns performance tracking from guesswork into objective measurement and engages your team—because when people know exactly how to win, they’re far more likely to deliver.

Take the time now to align your scorecard with your annual plan and give your team the tools to cross the finish line together.
