Does Directing Your Team Feel Like Herding Cats?

by James Canada

As business leaders, many of us have experienced that frustrating group dynamic we sometimes refer to as “herding cats.”Consequently, we shy away from solving problems or getting consensus in a group setting — even though we know team engagement is one of the keys to successful execution.

For me, the solution came to light when I first learned how to use facilitation skills in the corporate world. Since then, I have come to rely on facilitation as an excellent tool for cultivating both team inclusion and creative thinking.

In the role of facilitator, you’ll want to see yourself functioning not as a director but as a consultant and coach. Be sure to guide the individual members to function effectively as a group and, at the same time, coach and support the problem-solving process.

First, it’s important to establish the ground rules and how the group will operate, i.e., planning, decision making, leadership, evaluation, communication, trust and participation. Second, be sure to remain neutral on the topic. Third, create a safe environment that engages everyone in the discussions.

Here are a few more tips:

- Start with the team discussing and reaching consensus on the group norms or guidelines.
- Underplay your own personal ego and style. Collaborate with the team leader.
- Stick to the agenda — start and end on time.
- Observe and monitor progress. Get people talking. Unlock ideas. Give positive reinforcement.
- Provide feedback and intervene only when the team is not making any progress.

By following these parameters and maintaining inclusion, my hope is that you can enjoy facilitating your team through many problem-solving processes that will help your organization reach its goals.
