6 Ways to Drive Positive Change in the Workplace

by James Canada

In a world sometimes fraught with negativity, we forget that one person can make a difference. If you want to experience a better world, become a change agent by implementing some of these tips and watch what happens.

1. Many workers today are reluctant to make eye contact with co-workers. Be the first to smile and say “Good Morning” to everyone.

2. Competition in the workplace encourages us to strive for excellence. However, it’s not necessary to “beat” your co-workers. If you win and they lose, then you are both on the same team and you still lose.

3. If you find that you are temporarily caught up on your work, or that your work has momentarily been halted, then ask a co-worker if you can perform a task for them while you are waiting.

4. An attorney I once knew told me that it is often easier to tell the clerk, government employee, etc., what you are trying to accomplish and let them tell you how to get there, rather than to tell them what you want. Often, they will tell you the best way to get the system to work for you, or how to cut red tape.

5. Always treat others with respect and give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they were not ignoring you as you approached them but were mentally focused on something pressing.

6. I often ask for solutions from children or adults that I am sure have no experience with my problem. Many times, we are both surprised when they offer a valuable solution or unique insight.

As you experience the ripple effect that positive change creates, seek out more opportunities to improve your workplace relationships and environment.
