In today’s fast-paced workplace, communication is more critical than ever. Whether leading a team, presenting an idea, or managing a difficult conversation, strong communication skills can determine success or failure. Yet, many professionals struggle to deliver messages that are clear, engaging, and actionable. In this article, I’ll introduce my IMPACT© process—a structured approach to communication designed to ensure clarity, engagement, and influence in any professional setting.
What is the IMPACT Process?
In my influential book Communicating with IMPACT©, I cover the six-step framework for effective communication:
- Intention: Start with the “why,” not the “what.” Why are you communicating? Establish a clear intention for your communication. What do you want to achieve? The intention goes hand in hand with the message. Not taking an extra 60 seconds to think about your intention typically results in a weak message.
- Message: Once you know what you want to achieve, choose the best method to deliver it and craft a message that aligns with your intention. Ensure your message is clear, concise, and compelling.
- Person: Think about who you are communicating with. Don’t assume that everyone will digest information the same way. Personalize your message to the receiver. Whether speaking to executives, employees, or clients, adjust your tone, language, and examples to resonate with them. Make sure they have enough time to process the information.
- Activate: Today’s workers are more impatient and easily distracted. Keep yourself and your receiver engaged. Active listening and engagement are critical to effective communication. Use examples, stories, or visuals to make your message more impactful. Ensure your gestures, tone, and non-verbals match your message.
- Clarify: More often than not, miscommunication occurs in conversations. The sender (you) determines the meaning of the message—not the receiver. Check for understanding by encouraging questions, summarizing key points, and ensuring alignment before moving forward.
- Transform: Turn words into action to achieve your set intention. Whether your goal is a decision, a behavior change, or a commitment to the next steps, transformation is key. There are two types of transformation:
o External transformation focuses on ways to help your receiver achieve your intention.
o Internal transformation involves identifying and shifting thoughts, feelings, or beliefs that may be preventing action.
