Women Leaders - Stephanie Green, CEO/CFO, Atlas Iron Works

by Marianne Biangardi and Jennifer Bardot

When you began your career did you ever imagine you would have a leadership role like you have now? What advice would you give your younger self?
When I began my career, I certainly had aspirations and drive, but I couldn’t have imagined the exact path that would lead me to becoming both CEO, CFO, and now Shareholder of Atlas Iron Works. Growing up in St. Louis and being surrounded by the grit and determination of our city’s workforce, I always admired strong leadership. Still, I didn’t envision myself at the helm of a multi-generational ironworks company who’s been around since 1922.

Who inspires you and why? What is your most valued attribute in the leaders you respect or mentors you have had?
I’m inspired every day by my team, the dedicated individuals in our office, our ironworkers, project managers, and shop crew, who bring pride, precision, and purpose to everything they do. The trait I value most in leadership is authenticity. The most impactful mentors in my life weren’t necessarily the most vocal or charismatic, but they were consistently transparent, humble, and courageous. They weren’t afraid to admit when they were wrong or when change was necessary, even if it challenged their personal views. True leadership means setting ego aside and making decisions that serve the greater good of the business. It’s a selfless, principle-driven act.

What did it take in order to trust yourself to step into leadership?
Learning to trust myself didn’t happen all at once it was a gradual process shaped by consistency, self-awareness, and moments of quiet growth. In the beginning, I often questioned whether I was making the right decisions or heading in the right direction. But over time, I began to see the results: a stronger, more aligned team, clearer communication, a growing business, and a company culture that reflected my values.

Have you experienced any hardships and how did you overcome the obstacles. When did you know, the business was going to make it?
Like any business leader, I’ve faced my share of challenges economic fluctuations, labor shortages, company culture, and times when the numbers simply didn’t align from past practices. One of the most trying periods came during the early 2020s, at the start of my iron career, when global supply chain disruptions hit our industry hard. Steel prices soared, project timelines slipped, and uncertainty grew across the board.

What do you attribute your success too? Secret to your success?
My success is rooted in a blend of relentless curiosity, disciplined follow-through, and the incredible team I’m fortunate to lead. I’ve never shied away from asking tough questions or challenging conventional thinking, but I also stay grounded in data, structure, and strategic clarity. That balance allows me to make thoughtful, informed decisions that move the business forward.

What advice would you give other local women leaders?
Own your space. Don’t wait for an invitation to lead, or a title to validate your voice. Show up, speak up, and do so with humility and strength.
Also, find your tribe. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the women mentors, peers, and friends who reminded me of my worth on the tough days and celebrated my wins on the great ones. We are only stronger when we lift each other up.

Other items you would like to highlight
As a woman in construction and finance, I understand the importance of representation. I’m proud to be part of a legacy company that’s evolving with the times bringing new voices to the table while preserving the craftsmanship that built us. It’s not just about steel and structures it’s about building something that lasts, together.
