Tim Blattel
TWIN OAKS SENIOR LIVING

 Website: twinoaks.me

Industry: long-term care, assisted living

 What is your mission?

Our mission is to provide seniors with the best care and facilities possible to allow them  to enjoy their independence and live joy-filled lives. “We believe that all human beings are created by God and as such we recognize each person’s desire to be valued, needed, appreciated and loved.”

What was your first job?
A paperboy when I was 13 years old.

What was your worst job?
Cleaning the septic system at Twin Oaks.

What led you to your industry?
When I was a teenager I was working with handicapped and young adults. My high school sweetheart, who now is my wife, said, “You should come work at Twin Oaks with the elderly.”

What was the smartest thing your company did in the past year?
By listening to staff and residents we brought in programs and interior designs that best fit them for today and the future.

Who is your industry role model?
Mary Ann Huber. Her vision to provide an inviting place for residents to enjoy their friends, their families and their independence was a legacy that I and our whole family are proud to support and continue for years to come.

How do you try to differentiate your business from others in your industry?
We truly are a family business. We have over 13 family members that have different roles and responsibilities. We want people to feel that they are a part of our family and we will understand and quickly handle their needs. There is a level of consistency in our company that you don’t see everywhere. Most of us have been here for over 30 years.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

The hardest part of my job is to inform residents and their families that the time has come to leave our facility for a higher level of care. We are hoping to expand our services to meet these needs in the future.

What’s the best part?
Knowing that we make a difference in the residents’ lives and their families’ and to see our employees grow their families and become successful.

What best advice would you share with new entrepreneurs?
Find your passion in the work you do and you will be very successful. Work will be more like an adventure than work. In my case it was a natural fit for me to be with seniors.

What book is on your nightstand?
“The Love Dare.”

What has made you successful in your industry and in St. Louis?
I think commitment to the people we serve and the employees we work with. We serve the families of the St. Charles and St. Louis counties, and because we grew up here I feel we know their background and their needs and we are committed to them. I also feel our success is linked with our faith. We look at our company as a mission as well as a business, and we ask God to guide us in our decision-making always. We have been truly blessed.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love being with my family, playing softball and golf with my sons, watching movies, and playing games with my kids and grandkids. Branson is always my go-to place for free time!
