Time With The Boss: Scott Dieckgraefe, Studio D Marketing

Scott Dieckgraefe
STUDIO D MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS
Website: www.studioDmarcom.com
Industry: marketing communications, advertising/public relations/website/social media

What is your mission?
Studio D exists to help our clients solidify brands, generate revenue, seat messages and promote causes. Naturally we also like to have some fun and earn an honest buck or two in the process.

What was your first job?
I was an enterprising kid. When I was 14 I made business cards and went door to door securing lawns to mow. I used a push mower to cut grass for 15 homes in my neighborhood and saved up money that first year to buy a riding mower the next. My bent toward business entrepreneurship started a long time ago.

What was your worst job?
I’ve been fortunate in that I really haven’t had a bad job. I’ve been able to learn and grow from each – some have taught me how not to do things, others have taught me great approaches. But there’s always something to learn.

What led you to your industry?
I’m a lifelong student of business strategy, I enjoy helping others and I have a competitive nature. Advertising provides me an outlet to feed each of these motivators.

What was the smartest thing your company did in the past year?
We moved into a larger office suite, building out the space for our needs. Before the move, we were stacked tight, and with all of the noise we make in advertising and PR, the space just wasn’t conducive to our growth – or even to our daily work.

How do you differentiate your business from others in your industry?
We create Empowering Ideas for our clients, delivering crafted messages to the right audiences when they’re most receptive. We’re media-agnostic, meaning we do this through traditional and nontraditional advertising, public relations and interactive channels. Many other agencies seem to be tied to either traditional or new media channels and have difficulty bridging the divide.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

Maintaining a healthy balance between family time and business time.

What is the best part?
Everyone who works at Studio D enjoys creating successes for our clients and celebrating with them. For instance, we just distributed a client’s press release that was picked up by more than 100 media outlets throughout the country. For other clients, we’ve reallocated marketing resources to channels that deliver better results at the same or lower expenditure levels. The list goes on and on. It’s a great feeling to apply proven business strategies to outmaneuver other agencies and drive results for our clients!

What advice would you share with new entrepreneurs?

Be prepared for the time needed to form your business. I’m blessed with an understanding wife, and we’re essentially empty nesters, which simplifies time demands.

What is your favorite place in St. Louis?
Forest Park and the museum district.
